The photograph is titled “The Tale of Fairy Chimneys–Cappadocia,” dated 1939. A peasant boy walks along with an earthenware water jug in his hand. “Don’t think that he comes from those fairy chimneys behind him that have difficulty remaining erect,” noted the photographer. National Geographic Turkey has gathered numerous old photographs of and on Turkey in honor of its tenth anniversary. The photographs, covering a period from the Ottoman Empire to the early Republic, have been selected from among eight million printed cards found in National Geographic’s 123-year-old archives.
